Catering

Objectives

Target participants of the “First-Hire-Then-Train” Scheme (the “Scheme”) are those who are middle-aged (mainly homemakers). Under the “Scheme” implemented in Catering industry, hired trainees will receive training on basic service skills within working hours during the employment period. Upon completion of designated course, hired trainees will formally perform the duties of a waiter/waitress, and be able to master the skills required for daily duties of a waiter/waitress.

 

Content of the "Scheme"

Under the “Scheme”, an appointed training body of the ERB (Caritas - Hong Kong) will arrange for the provision of on-the-job training for trainees while the employer (The Hong Kong Jockey Club) will recruit 20 Waiter/Waitress Trainees and arrange them for training.

 

"First-Hire"

Appointment terms of the target job set out by the participating employer under the “Scheme” are as follows:

Waiter/Waitress Trainee

Entry requirements:

  • Aged 18 or above
  • Primary 6
  • Be proficient in speaking and reading Chinese and English
  • Applications from those who are middle-aged and unemployed are welcomed

Appointment period:

17 October 2019 to 11 August 2020 (Renewal of contract is subject to performance of trainee and mutual agreement between employer and trainee)

Remuneration:

$66 per working hour1; benefits include 7-day annual leave, 12-day statutory holidays per year and paid sick leave, MPF contributions, free meal2

Working hours:

  • During the one-month training period, at least 18 hours per week, working time to be arranged by the supervisor subject to operational needs:
    • 6:00 pm to 2:00 am on Wednesdays (trainees may be assigned to work on other days during the week subject to operational needs)
    • 10:30 am to 6:30 pm on Saturdays or Sundays
  • Upon completion of one-month training period, part-time or full-time trainees are both required to work on shift for 8 to 10 hours per day (including the above-mentioned working time)

Working location:

To be arranged by the employer, locations include Happy Valley Clubhouse, Happy Valley Racecourse, or Sha Tin Racecourse

Incentives for retention:

The employer will offer incentives to encourage trainees to stay in their jobs, including welcome reward3 and discretionary performance award4

1 Upon completion of one-month training period, trainees can remain  to work part-time ($66 per working hour) or change to full-time (monthly salary of $16,000) subject to work perfomance.
2  Trainees who are assigned to work in a shift of 6 hours or more will be entitled to free meal and a 30-minute paid meal break.
3  Upon completion of 20 working days during the first 4 months of employment, trainees will be entitled to a welcome reward of $2,000.
4  Subject to trainees’ attendance and performance.

"Then-Train"

Hired trainees will be arranged to attend the “Foundation Certificate in Service Skills (Part-time)” course with duration of 18 hours under “Skills Upgrading Scheme Plus” within working hours. Upon successful completion of the above course, trainees will be awarded graduation certificate.

The employer will arrange an experienced staff as mentor to provide trainees with on-the-job practical skills training and guidance, and assist trainees to adapt to the working environment.
